Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World

Trailer

Seeking A Friend  was not what I was expecting.
The trailer puts forward your standard rom com similar to Wanderlust but what you get is something a bit darker and a bit more beautiful.
It follows Carell and Knightly as they travel across America to reunite with his high school crush and her family before an asteroid collides with Earth killing ALL of the things.
The first half had me fully laughing out loud which is surprising as its the human race dealing with the apocalypse. Its Steve Carell's character's facial expressions as he can't quite take it all in and how anything goes because nothing really matters. As he pulls into work a man commits suicide and hits the windscreen of his car from above. Carell just stares with an expression of 'well...that happend'. Its sad but it's the confusion of not knowing how to take it all in that gets a laugh.
In any other movie the romance between Carell and Knightley's characters wouldn't work but given the circumstances they pull it off. Knightley's character is this wacky English girl who's only a tad annoying and as you find out more about them both you can't help but feel a tad of emotion knowing that their relationship won't last.
Which leads us into the emotional rollercoaster of the second half. As the countdown ticks down you become more aware that as much as you want it too, the story will not have a happy ending.
I found the ending quite fulfilling and packed full of emotion. You don't just feel sorry for the protagonists but the whole human race in general.
If you like a bit of cheese and schmaltz and like your humour on the dark side Seeking a Friend will leave you with a smile on your face and a lump in your throat.

Verdict
9.5 / 10
